Demo set for Sept. guild meeting

WGNC will host Art Liestman at the Sept. 10 meeting with a demonstration and discussion of therming, the art of inverted and sometimes off-center turning.

Art, who lives in British Columbia, has been making and selling turned objects for about 20 years. He particularly likes making whimsical objects and objects that do not appear to be made on the lathe. His work has been featured in numerous shows and exhibitions, magazine articles and books. He has demonstrated at the AAW symposium, the Utah Symposium, and other regional symposia. He regularly demonstrates and teaches for AAW chapters across North America.

Art, originally from Kansas, has lived in Coquitlam, British Columbia for many years. He recently retired from his career as a university Professor.

He will discuss the construction of jigs and show how to use them to turn curved surfaces on wood blanks. More details can be found in his April 201 American Woodturner article "Beyond Round: Therming." This technique is a bit more challenging and should only be attempted by the more experienced turners.
