Avelino Samuel from the Caribbean island of St. John will demonstrate his turning and carving artistry at the Oct. 8 meeting of the Woodturners Guild.

Seats are also available to members for workshops on Friday and Saturday (Oct.9-10) at Klinspor woodworking in Raleigh.

A native of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Avelino Samuel is an accomplished teacher and master woodworker who concentrates on producing fine woodturning. After earning a Master degree in Education at Eastern Michigan State University, he embarked on a nearly 30-year career teaching Industrial Arts at Julius E. Sprauve School, a kindergarten-through-ninth-grade school in Cruz Bay, St. John.

Avelino’s home and studio overlook spectacular Coral Bay on the east end of the island. Just outside his workshop filled with saws, grinders and a massive lathe, lies hidden a 20-foot wide “woodpile” of island logs. He is well known on the island, and forest rangers and utility crews alert him when they see downed trees that he might be interested in using. All of Avelino’s turnings feature recycled, St. John woods. Avelino is represented by fine galleries on St. John, St.. Thomas, and St. Croix.

Avelino will provide a free demonstration at the Thursday meeting at the NCSU Crafts Center and conduct members-only workshops on Oct. 9 and 10 at the Klingspor store at 3141 Capital Boulevard from 9AM to 4PM. WGNC will provide lunch and soft drinks for participants during the workshops.

There are ten places available each day on a first-come, first-served basis and the daily fee is $75. Reserve your space now by contacting the Chris Boerner at wgnc@ncturning.com . WGNC members please pay at the October meeting by cash, check or card. Wilmington Area members can pay at the workshop.

We just got the details on his Friday and Saturday workshops...

Friday will be on carving a bowl. The attached document describes the tools needed. WGNC and Klingspor are providing only the lathes and chucks. All hand and carving tools must be provided by the attendees.

Saturday will be carving a hollow vessel.
