Redwood - Wow!

Postby stephanmoll » Tue Apr 19, 2016 11:04 pm

Wow! Sequoia sempivirens (Coast Redwood). Turned two pieces: (a) a bowl (12.5'' x 2'') and (b) a platter (14.5''), out of reclaimed old-growth California redwood (brought from Gasquet in northern California to NC by WGNC member Mike Smith). What fascinating colors, glow and structures; what gold, bronze and silver shimmer along the growth rings. How it shines and “burns” when one moves the plate. And incredible to see how almost bland the light, blonde wood is at first, until the oil (walnut oil) hits it and – bang! - gives it back its red color. Fascinating and awe-inspiring throughout. My best woodturning experience yet.
